The Cross and Handrail Sculptures

The cross sculpture located inside the south entrance of the Education Building represents Christ, Judas and the twelve disciples.  After Judas’ betrayal of Christ and subsequent death, Matthias was selected to take Judas’ place.  The money bag at the bottom of the sculpture symbolizes Judas who carried the purse for the disciples.  Tradition tells us that all of the disciples died violent deaths; hence, there are 12 crosses representing the final twelve.  When Simon Peter was crucified, he asked to be hung upside down as he was unworthy to die as his Lord had.  The X is a St. Andrew’s cross as it was the form upon which he was crucified.

This sculpture was designed by Rev. Gerald Stevens and constructed by Cecil E. Holmes.  It measures 49” tall by 24 1/2” wide by 4” deep. 

Sanctuary.  Cecil Holmes designed the railings to compliment the structure of the building.  There are twelve circles with a cross in each depicting the twelve apostles.  The railings meet the fall of the landscape and were installed with the help of Holmes & Braden Construction and Tom Petersen.
